Boudoirlicious Homework - The History of Valentine's Day
As I mentioned in last weeks Boudoirlicious Homework, this month is the month of Love, so we are going to look at a range of areas regarding love. As next Tuesday is Valentine's day, this week we are going to look at the History of Valentine's day.
The History of Saint Valentine's Day
Valentine's day started in the time of the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honour Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses, the Romans also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage.
At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. Claudius wanted to have a big army but was having a hard time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. Many men didn't want to fight in wars because they would have to leave their families and wives. As a result of this, Claudius decided to cancel all marriages and engagements in Rome, so that men wouldn't have any commitments and therefore be able to join his army.
Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius II, after Claudius passed his law, he secretly kept on performing marriage ceremonies. Unfortunately though one day he got caught for secretly marrying couples and for his kind acts Saint Valentine was sentenced to jail and later death.
While awaiting his death sentence in prison, Valentine was approached by his jailor, Asterius. Asterius had a blind daughter. It was said that Valentine had some saintly abilities and one of them was healing people. A deep friendship developed between Valentine and Asterius daughter, on the day of his death, Valentine left a note for her and signed it, "Love from your Valentine", a phase that has lived on.
Valentine died on February 14th, 269 A.D, the day now known as Valentine's Day.
Well there we have it, the story behind Valentine's Day. I hope you enjoyed this post. I have posted this a day earlier as I am going to have an extremely busy day tomorrow. Have a wonderful weekend.
Best wishes,
Chloe
